I’ve always despised trying to theme my Windows desktops into a sleek and sexy looking console. It always seems like for the most part I’d have to install some software, which may or may not overwrite some system files. In the past, when I did try to theme my desktop there was always a deal breaker. For instance, a program like Photoshop which I use extensively would inherit parts of the theme ending up as a mess and difficult to use. I didn’t mind Windows Gadgets too much, but it always seemed like the rest of my Windows environment shunned their existence. It wasn’t until coming across a post on LifeHacker that I found out about a little platform called Rainmeter.
Rainmeter is cool and easy to use.
The involvement needed in spicing up my desktop is something I always consider before endeavoring the start making changes. Its real easy to change some things with the default theme capabilities. If I’m going to use a program to add some sort of cool cosmetic feature I want it to be simple. I don’t have the time or the patience to go mucking around the web looking for themes. I don’t want to go rocking through web pages which are plagued with shady looking advertisements and just plain nuances.
Rainmeter by all appearances is great. It seems to be rather popular; with a growing community of people working on it and others contributing themes. A large portion of their theme contributors seem to come from Deviant Art, which is a website and community I trust.
Lets just see what some people have done mmkay…
Here are some examples of Rainmeter skins which some very talented people have produced.

Some of these are incredible, and not just the few I’ve posted here, there are tons of really awesome themes for Rainmeter. To make things even better, you can mix and match theme components, which basically reflects limitless possibilities on what you do with your desktop. There are also just plugins. Unlike the themes I showed you, plugins are more like the individual gadgets that you can get from Mircrosoft’s gadget-place, only way better. Oh and it uses Lua (for you programmer types out there).
Anyway, here’s a screenshot of my current desktop, since you all might be wondering…
Here are a few links to where more themes and plugins can be found, starting with the Rainmeter recommended suites (and also where you can get Rainmeter).
